Singapore is widely regarded as one of the safest countries in the world. This statistic, coupled with the nation’s strong economy and political stability, has made Singapore one of the most desirable cities to reside in. As an expat, you might even consider putting down roots and making this country your permanent home.

If your mind is made, you will undoubtedly be considering your Singapore Permanent Residence (PR) application. This visa will allow you and your family to work and stay in Singapore permanently. Fortunately, there are various schemes you can tap on to secure a Singapore PR. Let us explore the avenues available to you.

1. Professional Technical or Skilled Professional (PTS) Scheme

Employments and careers in Singapore

If you possess an Employment Pass, Entre Pass, S Pass, or Personal Employment Pass and have worked in Singapore for a minimum of 6 months, you are eligible to apply for Singapore PR through the PTS scheme.

To ensure a seamless process of your Singapore PR application, we recommend having the following documents prepared and readily available:

  • Proof of employment documents
  • Proof of education
  • An up-to-date resume
  • Proof of your financial status
  • Documentation for any property you currently own in Singapore
  • Documents for your spouse and children (if applicable)

It is also advisable to provide additional value-add documents – reference letters, testimonials, and a cover letter – to enhance your chances of success.

You can expect your Singapore PR application to take between 6 to 12 months to process. Although, in some cases, the process might be longer due to the high demand for the coveted Singapore PR status, so do be patient.

2. Singapore PR Scheme for investors

Living professionally in Singapore

With an open economy and attractive corporate tax incentives for foreign and domestic entrepreneurs alike, it is easy to see why Singapore is considered one of the premium business hubs in Asia. And the government’s desire to attract accomplished investors to boost the nation’s economy extends to its immigration policy as well.

Through the Global Investor Programme (GIP), an entrepreneur looking to establish a business with a minimum sum of SGD2.5 million or invest the same amount in an existing business can apply for Singapore PR for their family members and themselves.

Currently, there are two investment options available:

  1. Invest a minimum sum of SGD2.5 million in a new business or expansion of an existing business operation in Singapore.
  2. Invest a minimum amount of SGD2.5 million in a GIP-approved fund.

3. Foreign Artistic Talent Programme

Just because you do not meet the eligibility criteria for the aforementioned two schemes does not mean you cannot qualify for a Singapore PR application. Singapore is also actively seeking foreign artistic talents to complement its thriving art scene and boost the nation’s standing as a regional hub for the arts.

To apply for Singapore PR through this scheme, you must possess relevant training or education in a specific field of practice – dance, art, photography, music, literature, film, or theatre. Additionally, you need to be involved in the nation’s art sector in the future and make significant contributions to its arts and cultural scene.

Applicants that meet the required criteria can submit their Singapore PR application with the necessary supporting documents to the National Arts Council (NAC)

4. Student Option

Education and learning at Singapore

Singapore is not only a great place for entrepreneurs looking to start a business, but it is also an attractive destination for international students due to its world-class educational facilities. Numerous expats studying in Singapore have even considered extending their stay after they graduate, leveraging the job opportunities available in the country.

If you are also considering this prospect, you can apply for Singapore PR through the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA). Do note that you must reside in Singapore for at least 2 years at the time of your application. Additionally, you need to pass one nation exam (PSLE, GCE ‘N’, ‘O’, or ‘A’ levels) or be enrolled in the Integrated Programme (IP).

5. Family Sponsor Scheme

Happily living in Singapore

Since you are pondering a permanent stay, you will want your family members to migrate and join you in Singapore. Furthermore, your family members will stand a greater chance of gaining approval if you are already a Singapore PR. So after your Singapore PR application is successful, you are encouraged to apply for PR status for your relatives, spouse, and children as well.

What happens if my application is rejected?

Singapore has a stringent immigration policy, so do not be discouraged if your application is rejected the first time. Fortunately, there are avenues for you to appeal your PR rejection. Please note that the PR appeal process must be carried out within 6 months from the date of your application’s rejection.

You will be required to submit your appeal letter if you wish to contest the decision. For those unfamiliar with the PR appeal letter format, do seek the help of a PR application consultant who can assist with the appeal process.

Even if it is your first time applying for PR, it is still wise to partner with a PR application agency in Singapore. With the required experience and expertise they possess, error-free submissions are made possible, which significantly enhances your chances of getting a favourable reply.

At Singapore Immigration Partners, we have worked with numerous expats on their PR applications.
